Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Iceland's ice caves?
Ice cave season in Iceland runs from November through March, when temperatures stay low enough to keep the caves structurally stable. The Katla ice cave near Vík is accessible year-round because it sits beneath a volcano, but winter months (December through February) offer the deepest blue ice and most dramatic light. Book at least two weeks ahead during peak season.
What should I wear on a glacier hike?
Tour operators provide crampons, ice axes, and helmets. You need waterproof hiking boots with ankle support (not trainers), thermal base layers, a waterproof and windproof outer shell, gloves, and a warm hat. Temperatures on the glacier can be 5–10°C colder than at the car park. Bring sunglasses — glacial ice reflects intense UV even on cloudy days.
Can I visit Jökulsárlón without booking a tour?
You can drive to the Jökulsárlón lagoon car park and view icebergs from shore without a booking. However, the boat tours that take you among the icebergs require advance reservation and sell out in summer. The amphibious boat tours run April through October. Diamond Beach, across the road, is free and open year-round.
How far are glacier tours from Reykjavík?
Sólheimajökull is the closest glacier to Reykjavík at roughly 2.5 hours' drive along the Ring Road. Jökulsárlón is about 5 hours from Reykjavík — most visitors combine it with an overnight stay near Vík or Höfn. Many tour operators offer Reykjavík pickup, which adds 30–60 minutes to the total duration but saves you the drive.
Are ice cave tours safe for children?
Most ice cave tours in Iceland set a minimum age of 8–10 years. The terrain involves walking on uneven ice surfaces with crampons, and cave interiors can be tight. Glacier hikes are more physically demanding — minimum ages range from 10–14 depending on the operator. Check individual tour listings for age restrictions before booking.
